Planes, trains, and automobiles: No we’re not just talking about various means of transportation or the name of an 80’s movie classic; we’re talking about what have come to be considered as mere toys for the rich and famous.
Millionaires and billionaires all over the world have been collecting things like mega-yachts, luxurious private jets, and super swanky cars for decades, but as technology progresses and the rich seem to be getting even richer, their modes of transportation have gotten downright outrageous in some cases.
So in today’s post we thought we’d show you some of the craziest toys on the market. Don’t get me wrong, these are modes of transportation; but for the mega-rich, they seem to be more like toys or pieces in the “My boat is bigger than your boat” game. I mean, really, does anyone really need a their own personal submarine?
So check out these 8 crazy modes of transportation—and by crazy, I mean crazy expensive.
The Eclipse Yacht
Price: $485 million
Owner: Roman Abramovich, Russia
Owned by Russian oligarch and Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich, this yacht is the world’s largest private yacht at 558 feet in length. Not only does it come at a price tag of almost half a billion, but it costs $2 million a week, just to take it on vacation! If you do plan to take it for a spin, though, that price includes: 20 water jets, a cinema, a library, a swimming pool, and a private garden among others. Worried about your safety on the yacht? Never fear, the whole thing is bullet and bombproof!
The Adastra Superyacht
Price: $15 million
Owner: Anto Marden
Five years ago Hong Kong shipping billionaire, Anto Marden, commissioned a Chinese boat engineer to create a yacht unlike anything the world has ever seen. Well, looks like he got his wish. This 140-foot vessel looks more like a spacecraft than a boat. Inside it includes a dining area, bedrooms, and full bathrooms. Nine people can stay in the boat comfortably, plus quarters for the crew. But even when there is no crew to steer the ship, the yacht can be controlled with an iPad from a range of 164 feet!
The Deep Challenger Submarine
Price: $8 million
Owner: James Cameron
No you didn’t misread: yes we said submarine and yes we said James Cameron, as in the mega-director of Titanic and Avatar. Not only does he own the submarine, but he also designed it himself. It includes a sediment sampler, a robotic claw, temperature/salinity/pressure gauges, an 8-foot tower of LED lights, 3D cameras, and a “slurp gun” to grab small creatures. Cameron is collecting footage and samples for an upcoming National Geographic documentary, but more than that, he is exploring areas of the ocean that have so far been neglected. For example, on his most recent dive he travelled nearly 7 miles below sea level to collect footage and samples. Not exactly a “luxury” vehicle; but still, pretty cool.
Boeing Business Jet 737
Price: $85 million
Owner Phil Ruffin
Phil Ruffin, an American businessman, had this Boeing Business Jet, with a price tag of $70 million in the first place, completely customized. With the $15 million in upgrades, Ruffin added leather seats, a dining room, 2 bedrooms, two showers, and yes, even sinks made of gold. And you can forget about those TVs in the back of the seats—this plan has two screens broadcasting live television.
Military Plane Collection
Price: $25 million
Owner: Paul Allen
Investor and philanthropist, Paul Allen, grew up collecting model airplanes. So it only made sense once he earned his first billions, to start collecting the real thing. His collection includes aircrafts used during World War II, which he shares with the public, often letting crowds witness planes in action.
Deluxe Marathon Coach RV
Price: about $2 million
Owner: Danica Patrick
Famous racecar drier, Danica Patrick, seems pretty comfortable behind the wheel, and so it is no wonder that one of her favorite places to relax is on the road. This isn’t your run of the mill RV, though; this Deluxe Marathon Coach is a like a luxury condo on wheels. It includes a flat-screen TV, a refrigerator, a washer, a dryer, a full kitchen, and even has enough room for a full-size Weber grill.
Bugatti 57 SC Atlantic Coupe
Price: $30-$40 million
Owner: Ralph Lauren
Fashion mogul Ralph Lauren is known for having quite the expensive car collection, but this 1938 Bugatti is the real gem of the collection. It is valued at about $30-$40 million and was put on display in Paris for the first time in 2011.
Maybach Exelero
Price: $8 million
Owner: Jay Z
This car is so luxurious, most people haven’t even heard of it. This Maybach was first spotted when Jay Z released his video for “Lost Ones” and since, he’s been spotted cruising around in this speedster on several occasions.
So if you could afford any “toy”—boats, cars, jets, etc.—what would you buy and why?
